Map & Compass - Orienteering
Orienteering is a
sport that involves finding your way through woodland terrain with the aid
of a map and compass.
Participants are
provided with a detailed map of the area, marked with the checkpoints of
an orienteering course. The object is to find your way to each checkpoint,
and finally back to the finish.
At each event there are
courses ranging from 2-3 km for beginners and the not so fit, to 8 or 12
km for the competitive and experienced runners.
What is the Appeal?
Orienteering has an appeal
for people of all ages and fitness levels… for the serious competitor, the
jogger, as well as the casual hiker. It is an ideal sport for the whole
family to participate as a group, and parents are often seen carrying
their babies in packs on their backs.
Orienteering is an easy,
painless way of staying fit, or getting into shape. Your physical exertion
in orienteering goes almost unnoticed as you read your map and follow your
route.
What kind of Equipment
will I need?
Durable running shoes or
light hiking boots and old clothing are all that’s needed to start. If you
have a compass… bring it along too.
Is
it Hard to Learn?
Orienteering is simple to
learn. You can catch on to the basic skills in approximately 30 minutes.
